A tragic incident in Kozhikode, Kerala, has sparked widespread anger after a 42-year-old man, Deepak, died by suicide following a viral video accusing him of sexual harassment on a bus. The video, posted by a woman named Shimjitha Musthafa, showed Deepak allegedly touching her inappropriately during a crowded bus ride. The video garnered over 2 million views, leading to intense public backlash and online abuse against Deepak.
Deepak's family claims he was under severe mental distress and was a victim of character assassination through social media. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and are investigating the incident. A fresh FIR has been filed against Shimjitha for abetment to suicide, and she's currently absconding.
The incident has sparked debates on social media vigilantism, police responsibility, and due process. The State Human Rights Commission has ordered a probe into the matter, and the All Kerala Men’s Association has approached the High Court seeking a CBI or Crime Branch probe.
