Bheemanna Khandre was a renowned Indian politician and freedom fighter who passed away on January 16, 2026, at the age of 102. He was a prominent leader of the Indian National Congress party and served as the Transport Minister of Karnataka from 1992 to 1994. Khandre was also a key figure in the Karnataka Ekikarana movement, which aimed to unify Kannada-speaking districts. He was born on November 1, 1925, in Bhalki, Bidar district, Karnataka, and was a lawyer by profession. Khandre was elected to the Karnataka Legislative Assembly four times and was a member of the Legislative Council twice. He was known for his contributions to education and cooperative movements, founding institutions like the Shantivardhak Education Society and the Bidar Cooperative Sugar Factory. Khandre was also a key figure in the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community and worked tirelessly for education and cooperative movements. Some of his notable achievements include: - *Freedom Movement*: Participated in the Hyderabad Liberation Movement and opposed the Razakars. - *Karnataka Unification*: Ensured Kannada-speaking districts, including Bidar, became part of Karnataka. - *Education*: Founded institutions like Akkamahadevi College in Bidar and an engineering college in Bhalki. - *Cooperative Sector*: Led the Bidar Cooperative Sugar Factory and Mahatma Gandhi Sugar Factory.
