Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha

Karnataka Forest Minister Eshwar B Khandre has been unanimously elected as the president of the All India Veerashaiva-Lingayat Mahasabha, the apex body of the state's dominant Lingayat community. This marks a significant milestone for Khandre, whose father, Bheemanna Khandre, also served as the president of the Mahasabha. As president, Khandre plans to establish a hostel for 1,000 women students from the community in Bengaluru and construct Veerashaiva-Lingayat Bhavans in districts without one, providing training for competitive exams. The Veerashaiva-Lingayat community is one of the largest communities in Karnataka, and Khandre has emphasized the need for unity within the community. He has also urged community members to declare their religion as "Others" in the caste census, seeking recognition as a separate religion. The All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha was founded in 1904 by Hanagal Kumaraswamiji, a saint and social reformer. The Veerashaiva movement itself, however, has its roots in the 12th century, led by Basavanna, a philosopher, statesman, and social reformer who challenged the caste system and advocated for equality and devotion to Shiva. Basavanna's teachings emphasized personal devotion, social reform, and equality, inspiring a movement that spread across southern India. The All India Veerashaiva Mahasabha, established centuries later, aims to promote the interests of the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community and preserve their cultural heritage.
