One staff nurse to look after a primary health center for 24/7

National Health Mission brought definitive results in the country. Brought down the Maternal Death and Child death to the defined goals in some of the states in the country.

24/7 PHC 3 staff nurses were serving and providing the patient care. But, with reference to the increased MBBS doctors vacancies increased referral cases and people opted CHCs and Above institutions for proper care.

The Maternal Health section issued an order stating 24/7 PHCs where delivery load is less than 5, only one staff nurse will be allotted and less than 10 deliveries 2 staff nurses will be present and above 10 deliveries 3 staff nurses to give proper care to the people.

This act refuses to accept the contractual staff as the human being. It had increased burden on the single staff nurse to look after the facility for 24/7  or round the clock. These staff nurses will have health related issues, no personal life, no care for personal life for the meager salary of 14000 when a doctor gets Rs.45000 and a specialists gets Rs.110000.

When one staff nurse is present she can not be sent for any type of training and it will result in the degradation of the skills.

Irrespective of the nature of employment Government should provide 3 staff nurses to look after the primary health centers. Past performance should not be considered to evaluate the future as Health is a very skilled field. With the arrival of the best skill, it will automatically draw the attention of the people and definitively people come to take the treatment.

Where are these nonperforming 24/7 PHCs located? Not definitely at the center of the habitation. Normally located far away from the habitation. Either the road is not good, water not available, no electricity or back up electricity, no medical officer, no quarters, non availability services at night.

Rather than decreasing the number of staff nurses looking after the delivery load one should not forget to look at the OPD/IPD. Today with the role of administrative medical officer and shortage of regular doctors one doctor will be looking after more than one institution and oddly he gets a day to visit the facility between the training, meetings, video conferences.
