2016 ರಲ್ಲಿ ವಿಶ್ವದಲ್ಲಿ ಜರುಗಿದ 5 ವರ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಾವಿನಲ್ಲಿ 8% ಸಾವುಗಳು ಅತಿಸಾರದಿಂದ ಸಂಭವಿಸಿವೆ. ಅತಿಸಾರ 5 ವರ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಮುಖ್ಯ ಕಾರಣವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮುಂದುವರಿದು ನೋಡಿದರೆ  ಸರಳ ಪರಿಣಾಮಕಾರಿ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆಯ ಲಭ್ಯತೆಯ ಹೊರತಾಗಿಯೂ 1300 ಎಳೆಯ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಪ್ರತಿ ದಿನ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿವೆ ಅಥವಾ 480000 ಮಕ್ಕಳು ವಾರ್ಷಿಕವಾಗಿ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪಿದ್ದಾರೆ ಎಂದರೆ ಆಶ್ಚರ್ಯವೇ ಸರಿ. 5ವರ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಾವಿಗೆ ಹಲವಾರು ಕಾರಣಗಳಿವೆ. ಇವುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಮುಖ್ವೈಯವಾದ ವೈದ್ಯಕೀಯ ಕಾರಣಗಳೆಂದರೆ, :- ನ್ಯೂಮೋನಿಯಾ, :- ಜನ್ಮಜಾತ ವೈಪರೀತ್ಯಗಳು ಮತ್ತು ಒಬ್ಬರಿಂದೊಬ್ಬರಿಗೆ ಹರಡದ ರೋಗಗಳು :-ಗಾಯಗಳು :-ಎಚ್.ಐ.ವಿ/ಏಡ್ಸ :-ಮಲೇರಿಯಾ :-ದಡಾರ :-ನಿಗದಿತ ಸಮಯಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮುಚಿತವಾಗಿ ಜನಿಸುವುದು :-ನವಜಾತ ಶಿಶುವಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರಕ್ತ ನಂಜಾಗುವುದು  ಮತ್ತು ಇತರೆ ಕಾರಣಗಳು ಭಾರತ ದೇಶದಲ್ಲಿ ಜರುಗುವ 5 ವರ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಶಿಶು ಮರಣದಲ್ಲಿ 10% ಮರಣಗಳು ಅತಿಸಾರದಿಂದ ಸಂಭವಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. 1 ಲಕ್ಷದವರೆಗೆ 5 ವರ್ಷದೊಳಗಿನ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ವಾರ್ಷಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಾವನ್ನಪ್ಪುತ್ತಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಅತಿಸಾರವು ಬೇಸಿಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಮಾನ್ಸೂನ್ ತಿಂಗಳುಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೀರ್ವವಾಗಿರುತ್ತದೆ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿ ಅತಿಸಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಬಲಿಯಾಗುವ ಮಕ್ಕಳು ಕೆಳವರ್ಗದ ಹಾಗೂ ಕೆಳ ಮಟ್ಟದ ಸಾಮಜಿಕ, ಆರ್ಥಿಕ ಸನ್ನಿವೇಶಗಳುಳ್ಳ ಕುಟುಂಬದವರಾಗಿರುತ್ತಾರೆ.
