Trading account and Demat account.
Think of it like this 👇
A *Trading Account* and a *Demat Account* work together, but they do 2 completely different jobs.
*1. Trading Account*
This is your "buy/sell shop".
- *Purpose*: Used to place orders to buy or sell shares, mutual funds, F&O, etc. in the stock market
- *Works like*: Your shopping cart + payment counter. When you buy, money goes out. When you sell, money comes in
- *Linked to*: Your bank account
- *Example*: You say "Buy 10 shares of Reliance". The trading account sends that order to NSE/BSE
*2. Demat Account*
This is your "digital locker".
- *Purpose*: Used to _hold_ the shares and securities you buy in electronic form. No physical share certificates
- *Works like*: Your cupboard/locker. After you buy shares, they get stored here safely
- *Linked to*: Your trading account and Depository - NSDL or CDSL
- *Example*: After you buy those 10 Reliance shares, they are credited to your Demat account in 1 day
*Quick Comparison Table*
**Trading Account** **Demat Account**
**What it does** Buy & Sell securities Hold securities electronically
**Analogy** Shopping Cart + Cash Counter Digital Locker / Cupboard
**Linked with** Bank Account Trading Account + Depository
**Needed for** Placing trade orders Storing shares, bonds, ETFs, MF
**Charges** Brokerage on trades AMC - Annual Maintenance Charge
**Without this** You can't trade You can't hold shares you buy
*How they work together - Example*
1. *Bank Account* → You transfer ₹10,000
2. *Trading Account* → You place order: "Buy 10 TCS shares @ ₹1000"
3. *Exchange* → Order gets executed
4. *Demat Account* → Next day, 10 TCS shares get credited to your demat
When you sell:
*Demat* → Shares get debited → *Trading* → Order placed → *Bank* → Money credited
*Key Points to Remember*
1. *You need both* to trade in shares in India. SEBI made it mandatory
2. *Trading account alone* = You can trade but have nowhere to store shares
3. *Demat alone* = You can hold shares gifted/inherited but can't buy/sell
4. *Many brokers give "2-in-1" or "3-in-1" account* = Trading + Demat + Bank in one login
Most discount brokers like Zerodha, Groww open both together for free.
